How we verify

Orthodontist Index is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.

Sources

• NPPES NPI Registry (CMS) — The federal registry of National Provider Identifiers, published monthly by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. We use the September 2026 bulk file.
• NUCC Health Care Provider Taxonomy — The code set that defines each registered specialty.
• ADA National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties — The list of recognized dental specialties, including orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.

We load every active NPI in the monthly NPPES bulk file whose primary taxonomy is Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (1223X0400X), an ADA-recognized dental specialty. Deactivated NPIs are excluded.

“Registered orthodontist” means the provider chose orthodontics as its primary taxonomy. NPPES does not check taxonomy or license numbers, so we label them as registered or listed and link every profile to the official registry record. Board certification is a separate credential we do not claim.

General dentists who offer braces or aligners are not listed, because we only include providers registered under the orthodontic specialty.

We drop individual orthodontists whose NPI record has not been updated since before 2013, because a record untouched for over a decade usually belongs to someone who has retired or moved. When one practice holds several NPIs at the same address, we list it once and show the other NPIs on its profile.

Order within a city: records updated most recently first, then alphabetical. Featured listings appear in a separate, labelled box and never change that order.

What a badge means

Registered orthodontists: the NPI is active in the September 2026 NPPES file published by CMS and its primary registered taxonomy is Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, an ADA-recognized specialty. The taxonomy is self-reported; board certification by the American Board of Orthodontics is a separate, voluntary credential. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.

Freshness

Data was last refreshed on 2026-09-30. CMS publishes a new NPPES file every month; we re-load it monthly.
